Dubbed ‘the beating heart of Suva’ by Lonely Planet, the Suva Municipal Markets are abundant with fresh tropical produce delivered daily from the various regional divisions. Produce generally arrives early and is sold in bulk to third-party vendors who then on-sell to customers. Alternatively, vendors sell produce farmed by family members in more remote areas. Due to this the guarantee of organic produce is problematic. However, the Pacific Organic and Ethical Trade Community (POETCom) is working to raise awareness and understanding of organic agriculture, hopefully leading to better produce differentiation.
