12 months, 681 rural producers trained, FJ$11,500 income paid to organic producers, & 1,800 Hectares of land now under organic land management in the Fiji Islands ♡
By Litia Kirwin, Founding Director, Loving Islands
Suva, Fiji: The final Project report for the Loving Islands Farmer Enterprise Network has now been completed and available for download below. This initiative was one of Loving Islands’ key community development Projects in 2019, made possible through a small seed-funding grant from the Technical Centre for Agricultural & Rural Cooperation (CTA) as part of their Promoting Nutritious Food Systems in the Pacific Islands programme.
And so, this brings us to the reasons for sharing this report – internal transparency & to share the lessons learned on the way to our achievements and short-comings. And hopefully by doing so, inspire others to support organic micro-business developments in their communities.
Read on for highlights with the download link to the report at the end. As always, don’t forget to purchase goods at our online store or physical shop to support Fiji’s organic micro-businesses and producers ♡
Community-based Agricultural Movement In Fiji Is Alive & Continues To Present A Viable Pathway For Inclusive & Sustainable Self-led Development In Rural Communities.
As the initiative continues beyond the funding cycle the objective remains the same – improving rural farmer livelihoods & environmental sustainability of agricultural practices using organic farming value-chains. Now in 2020, after 12-months of Project implementation from December 2018 – November 2019 it is clear that the community-based agricultural movement in Fiji is alive. And this niche industry continues to present a viable pathway for inclusive and environmentally sustainable self-led livelihood development for Fiji’s rural communities.
The Rise & Fall Of Organic Micro-Enterprises & The Need For Community-based Leadership, Unity, & Perseverance.
Over the implementation period we have seen community-based organic micro-businesses emerge and strengthen, as well as stagnate and collapse. Whilst there are great challenges faced by all rural communities in Fiji, we saw the successful businesses all had the following 3 traits in common – strong leadership, team unity, and perseverance. And until these 3 align within the same time, place and space there are few challenges that can be overcome and little progress to be made.
Vinaka Vakalevu // Thank You!
Thank you once again to all Project partners, particularly the Pacific Organic & Ethical Trade Community (POETcom) for the years of technical guidance and moral support. As well as to friends, families, customers and last but not least the communities we work with. It is both humbling and reassuring to work towards a brighter future with you all.
