Situated in the Hunter Valley and Orange, Tamburlaine wines is Australia’s largest producer of organic and biodynamic wines (no to mention also highly acclaimed)! Given that Tamburlaine will be the exclusive wine partner for the Loving Islands online store launch, we decided to take a trip out to the vineyards to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes.
Established in 1966, the Tamburlaine vineyards in the Hunter Valley have been run by Chief Wine maker Mark Davidson and his team since 1985. From the brief but insightful tour of the vineyards and buildings (thanks again to Ayla!), it is clear that Tamburlaine’s organic and biodynamic practices are well considered and seamlessly integrated across the winemaking process ~ from the companion planting of rye grass between alternating rows of vines to act as a natural pesticide (attracts the wasps which deter the moths), to the hay-insulated packing and processing sheds and the worm farms which turn food wastage into a rich natural fertiliser.
Whilst organic wine has received a bad rap in certain circles (E.g. ‘shorter shelf life’, ‘lower quality’), the only thing evident in the tasting room was that each of the wines tasted were filled with well-balanced flavours and absolutely delicious! But please don’t rely on our accounts alone ~ we’re no experts! ~ for that we’ll direct you towards James Halliday’s 2016 Wine Companion, who currently rates Tamburlaine as a 5/5 red star winery (red stars for consistently high performance over the years)!
So there you have it ~ an absolute must if you find yourself in the area. And if you do, be sure to call ahead as they’d most likely be happy to have someone show you around if available. Despite being in business for 30 years, the winery still has a very personal and family-friendly feel.
Tamburlaine organic wines will be served at the Loving Islands online store launch this Sunday (details below). Guests will also be treated as honorary members by Tamburlaine for any wine orders placed on the night, which will kindly receive their members-only Christmas pricing. Attendance to the event is limited with RSVP essential. Please email contact@lovingislands.com.
